No matter your age or experience level, the Rogue Rock Gym has something for everyone. Read on to learn more about what you can expect on your first visit.
Everyone who visits the Rogue Rock Gym, both climbers and spectators, need to complete a Participant Agreement. You can do so online before your visit or at one of our iPad stations in the gym. Children under 18 require a Parent or Legal Guardian to complete the form.
Top Roping takes place on our taller walls (25-30 ft) using ropes & harnesses. A belayer is required to take slack out while you climb, which prevents you from falling to the ground when you let go. This is an important skill and only those who have been Top Rope Belay Certified can do this inside Rogue Rock Gym.
Bouldering is a style of climbing that involves shorter walls (10-15 ft), scaled without ropes or harnesses. Large mats are placed around the bouldering area for protection if you fall. No certification is required for Bouldering and purchasing a Day Pass grants you access to this area. Keep in mind that, though it's the easiest to come in and try, bouldering is more physically demanding than roped climbing and does not lend itself as well to beginners.
Rogue Rock gyms has six autobelays, or automatic belay systems that can be used to climb our taller walls. These are a great way to get started in the world of climbing as they require only a quick training/orientation session before use. Climbers in Rogue Rock Gym must be 12 years or older to use the Autobelays unsupervised.
For your first visit, we think it’s best to start with one of our classes or programs. It will help you get acquainted with the facility, share the experience with other new climbers and learn more about the sport. Here are two options we recommend:
A Climb Time is the perfect opportunity for your child to become introduced to climbing. They will spend one hour with one of our professional instructors, who will belay and coach them as they reach their limits on the wall. The cost is $40 per session, and includes rental equipment. Group pricing available. Please call ahead to schedule.
INTRO TO INDOOR CLIMBING
Our Intro to Indoor Climbing class will teach you the essential skills needed to climb at the Rogue Rock Gym. You’ll learn to properly put on a harness, tie into the rope and belay for a partner. You will have an opportunity to practice these skills during your class under close supervision from a Rogue Rock Gym instructor. The minimum age for this class is 14 and requires pre-registration. Bringing the whole family along?
Climbing is the perfect sport for kids, but it can also be dangerous. It is important to view our facility as a training center, not a playground. Here are some tips to ensure you and your family get the most out of your experience:
1. We require adult supervision for any child under the age of 14. Our instructors are here to ensure your child has a fun climbing experience, but we need your help to achieve that.
2. When in the bouldering areas (the shorter walls without ropes), please do not allow your child to walk, run or play under other climbers.
